Typo? Or is Congressman Blunt Trying to Hide His Latest Big Oil Contributions?
Latest campaign finance disclosures show $18,800 from Exxon executives
Jefferson City – Despite taking considerable heat over his cozy relationship with Big Oil interests, Congressman Roy Blunt appears to be continuing to rake in the money from oil industry giants like ExxonMobil. In fact, Blunt’s second quarter fundraising report shows he received contributions from 16 ExxonMobil executives and employees, including CEO Rex Tillerson, between May 1 and June 7. But a spelling error on Blunt’s second quarter fundraising report raises questions: Did Congressman Blunt misspell one of his largest campaign supporters – ExxonMobil – or did he deliberately try to hide campaign donations by spelling it “Exxon Mobile”? [FEC.gov]
After 14 years in Washington protecting Big Oil, Congressman Blunt has not been shy about his close ties to Big Oil – even accepting campaign cash from Halliburton after the Gulf oil spill began [Politico, 6/2/10]. And just recently his unapologetic support for Big Oil has gained more attention when Forbes reported that Blunt is the number two recipient of Big Oil money in the entire House of Representatives [Forbes, 6/15/2010]. Blunt continues to support limiting oil companies’ liability for oil spills and protecting their government subsidies and tax breaks. He even cosponsored a bill to weaken safety regulations on offshore oil rigs. [HR 5356; Introduced 5/20/10; HR 2776, Vote 835, 8/4/07; HR 4761, Vote #356, 6/29/06]
“Congressman Blunt should know that a spelling error can’t hide more than $700,000 in Big Oil campaign contributions,” said Ryan Hobart, Communications Director for the Missouri Democratic Party. “Whether this is a typo or another attempt to rewrite his record when it comes to putting corporate special interests first, it is time that Congressman Blunt is honest about his 14-year Washington record.”
Congressman Blunt’s “Honors”: A Record of Chart-Topping Big Oil Donations
Top (#1) Recipient of Big Oil Money on the Energy & Commerce Committee: Despite being in the minority party and from a state that produces little oil, Congressman Blunt has taken more money from oil and gas interests since the beginning of 2009 than any other member of the powerful House Energy & Commerce Committee ($133,100). This is more than the Chairman of the committee and the Ranking Member (Texas Republican Joe Barton) have received combined. [Associated Press, 6/17/10]
Second-highest recipient of Big Oil money in the entire House of Representatives this cycle. Forbes released an article “Where Big Oil Puts Its Money on Capitol Hill.” The article notes that Congressman Blunt has the distinction of being the second-highest recipient of Big Oil money in the entire House of Representatives for the current campaign cycle. Long time Washington incumbent Congressman Blunt has 8 opponents, including Tea Party favorite State Senator Chuck Purgason, in the Missouri primary for U.S. Senate.
Have you heard? Not only is my likely opponent, Congressman Blunt, raking in money from Washington lobbyists, Big Oil and Wall Street interests… just this week he turned to the man who helped drive our economy off the cliff–Karl Rove–to help him raise more money!
Only two days remain until the end of our fundraising quarter. So we need YOUR help to help close out the quarter with a strong finish. Will you donate today?

Jefferson City, MO – The MDP released new video footage of Congressman “Bailout” Blunt attending a VIP Gala for lobbyists and the Washington, DC social elite at the “Social Safeway” grocery store event last week. On the video, Congressman “Bailout” Blunt, amidst the clanking of champagne glasses, comfortably tells the camera that he lives “pretty close” to the new upscale grocery store in Georgetown. The nonchalant behavior at a Washington elite social function serves as yet another reminder of how Congressman Blunt has come a long way from Springfield to become the very worst of Washington during his last 13 years there.
Congressman Blunt joined with over 650 Members of Congress, lobbyists and social climbers as they enjoyed a Belvedere Vodka fountain and brie cheese flown in from Paris, France in the swanky Georgetown neighborhood [Washington Post, 5/6/10].
“This might be the one case where we can take Congressman ‘Bailout’ Blunt at his word: he stopped calling Missouri his home a long time ago,” said Ryan Hobart, Communications Director for the Missouri Democratic Party. “In fact, the ‘Social Safeway’ is right around the corner from the multi-million dollar mansion he and his lobbyist wife Abigail are building in Washington. If there is one thing that is clear, it is that Congressman ‘Bailout’ Blunt has forgotten where he came from and is never coming back to Missouri.”

Fired Up Missouri and OpenSecrets discussed the Washington impact of BP’s oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico last week.
It turns out that Missouri’s own Washington insider, Roy Blunt, has received thousands in campaign cash from BP and is one of BP’s favorite insiders.
If BP faces heavy federal scrutiny, it’s well-positioned to fight back: The London-based company has consistently spent top dollar to influence legislative and regulatory activity in Washington, D.C., the Center for Responsive Politics finds…
In 2009, individuals and political action committees associated with BP donated $16,000 to members of the House Energy and Commerce Committee.
In addition, five of the all-time top 10 recipients of BP money in the House of Representatives sit on the House Energy Committee: John D. Dingell (D-Mich.) Joe Barton(R-Tex.), Ralph M. Hall (R-Tex.), Roy Blunt (R-Mo.) and Fred Upton, (R-Mich.).
Congressman Roy “Bailout” Blunt Rakes in Wall Street Money as He Blocks Efforts to Hold Them Accountable
Blunt voted to deregulate the banks, led the effort to bail them out at taxpayers’ expense, and now opposes any action to rein in Wall Street
Again and Again, Blunt Sides with Wall Street Banks over Missouri Families, Proving he is the Very Worst of Washington
St. Louis, Mo. – As folks in Washington continue to debate whether or not to rein in Wall Street from future abuses, there’s a lot of lobbying and back-scratching going on to slow down the process. And once again, Congressman Roy Blunt is at the center of it all. He and Wall Street banks have a mutually beneficial relationship. For Wall Street banks: a free ride, then a $700 billion taxpayer funded bailout with no strings attached, and a reliable opponent of reform. For Blunt: a steady stream of hefty campaign contributions to fatten his war chest. According to McClatchy, Blunt now ranks second overall in the amount of money he has taken from commercial banks. [McClatchy, 4/25/2010]
“Congressman Blunt pushed through the $700 billion Wall Street bailout in 2008 and now is teaming up with Wall Street lobbyists to stand in the way of reform,” said Robin Carnahan, candidate for US Senate. “Washington should have been addressing Wall Street reform last year and it is completely unacceptable that Wall Street lobbyists have been given more time to block reform. As someone who has helped many wronged investors, I believe we need to hold Wall Street accountable and end too-big-to-fail institutions so taxpayers are never left on the hook again.”
According to the St. Louis Post Dispatch: “Mr. Blunt was in Congress throughout the late 1990s and early 2000s when, during both Republican and Democratic administrations, the banks got everything they asked for, subsequently wrecking the economy. Mr. Blunt has been a reliable pro-banking industry vote, from repealing the Glass-Steagall Act in 1999 to refusing to allow bankruptcy judges to modify mortgages in 2009.” [St. Louis Post Dispatch editorial, 11/10/09]
In October 2008, Congressman Blunt voted not once – but twice – and led the efforts to pass the $700 billion financial rescue (“bailout”) package championed by former President Bush and former Treasury Secretary Hank Paulson. After the bill was first defeated in the face of public outrage and opposition from his fellow Republicans, then Minority Whip Roy Blunt took the lead in convincing skeptical Republicans to support the bailout. Though the bill ultimately passed 263-171, 108 Republicans, including Missouri Reps. Akin and Graves and former Rep. Kenny Hulshof, voted “no.” Later, during an interview with the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, Congressman Blunt said Paulson had credited Blunt and Sen. Judd Gregg for making sure the TARP legislation passed. [HR 1424, Vote #681, 10/3/08; HR 3997, Vote #674, 9/29/09, St. Louis Post-Dispatch, 11/23/08; Office of House Republican Leader, Press Release, 9/26/08; Gannett News Service, 9/30/08]
And now, Congressman Roy Blunt is such a reliable ally for Wall Street that, according to Reuters, the ranking Republican on the Senate Banking committee Richard Shelby urged bankers opposed to reform to send a $10,000 check to Congressman Blunt’s campaign. And Congressman Blunt has delivered yet again, already voting once against reform to rein in Wall Street and promising to continue to fight it in the months ahead. [HR 4173, Vote #968, 12/11/09]
Congressman Blunt voted to deregulate the banks, led the effort to bail them out at taxpayers’ expense, and now opposes any action to rein in Wall Street … all that, while he keeps taking their money; it’s just another example of why he’s become the very worst of Washington.
Robin Carnahan is running for the U.S. Senate Seat currently held by U.S. Senator Kit Bond (R-MO) who is retiring. She is currently in her second term as Missouri Secretary of State where she has worked across party lines to protect consumers by standing up to big institutions and getting more than $10 billion returned to wronged investors, and to cut red tape for small businesses so they can save resources and create more jobs. A breast cancer survivor with a background in business and law, Robin also still oversees her family’s cattle farm in Rolla, MO. We shared with you some of the ugliness yesterday by “patriotic protesters”. Today I am wondering if Congressman Blunt will stand against the derogatory and racists behavior displayed yesterday?
CONGRESSMAN ROY BLUNT VOTES “NO” TO CREATING JOBS FOR OUT-OF-WORK MISSOURIANS – STUNNING VOTE AGAINST BIPARTISAN JOBS BILL IN HOUSE
Despite Missouri Having Over 288,000 Unemployed Residents, Blunt Opposed Bill That Will Put Missourians Back To Work
Blunt Also Voted Against Stimulus Package Last Year – Bill Created Over 2 Million Jobs Last Year Alone, According To New Report From Nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office
For the second time in a span of just several months, Congressman Roy Blunt continued to ignore the 288,000 unemployed residents of his state by voting “no” to the HIRE Act this afternoon, a commonsense job creation package that will create thousands of good, new jobs across Missouri and more than a million jobs across the nation. The bipartisan bill, has four key provisions including a payroll tax holiday for businesses to encourage hiring, additional funds to help small businesses expand, an extension of the Highway Trust Fund to allow more infrastructure investments, and an expansion of the Build America Bonds program to allow states finance infrastructure projects. Today’s “no” vote comes just several months after Congressman Blunt voted “no” to a House jobs bill last December.
“Congressman Roy Blunt continues to ignore the economic realities of his state by voting against every piece of legislation designed to jumpstart job creation,” said DSCC National Press Secretary Deirdre Murphy. “Instead of looking out for the unemployed workers of Missouri, Congressman Blunt’s voting record shows he cares more about political posturing than the people he has sworn to represent. Today’s vote is just the latest example that Congressman Blunt has been in Washington for far too long.”
According to a new report from the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office, the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, which Congressman Blunt also voted against, created over 2 million last year, has boosted the US economy by 3.5%, and has lowered the unemployment rate by up to 2.1%. The CBO projects that the stimulus will have an even greater impact in 2010.
Salt in the Wound: Blunt Bus Tour Runs over the Jobless
New Interactive Map Details Congressman Blunt’s Real Record on Jobs
Senator Bond votes for jobs bill to help put Missourians back to work – will Congressman Blunt and Chuck Purgason put politics aside and support bipartisan measure?
Jefferson City – Congressman Roy Blunt has been traveling the state talking about jobs and the economy, but no amount of fancy rhetoric can hide the fact that under Congressman Blunt’s watch unemployment in Missouri rose from 2.6% to 9.6%, and thousands of jobs were shipped overseas. Below is a link to an interactive map showing the real effects of Congressman Blunt’s failed economic policies.
The real question now is what would Congressman Blunt do to get Missourians back to work? Just yesterday, Senator Kit Bond joined his colleagues in supporting the bipartisan jobs bill to help put Missourians back to work. Will Congressman Blunt and Chuck Purgason put politics aside and support a commonsense measure that helps Missouri families, or will Congressman Blunt continue to spin his abysmal economic record and hope no one notices him standing in the way of new jobs for Missouri?
“Washington insider Congressman Blunt is hoping that by simply talking about job creation folks will forget that his failed leadership and special interest giveaways led to the most severe economic downturn since the Great Depression,” said Missouri Democratic Party Spokesman Ryan Hobart. “While Blunt was in Congressional leadership, catering to the needs of lobbyists and special interests and turning a $128 billion into a $1.2 trillion dollar deficit, unemployment in Missouri shot up to nearly 10 percent. One thing is clear, Congressman Roy Blunt has a dismal record when it comes to the economy and jobs.”
HAPPY ANNIVERSARY: A YEAR OF HYPOCRITICAL DC DOUBLESPEAK FROM CONGRESSMAN BLUNT
Big Spending Congressman Blunt Voted Against Jobs Bill Last Year, But Tried To Take Credit For A Project Funded By It
Club for Growth: “It’s pretty hypocritical for someone to be against the stimulus and then walk around handing out big checks … Republicans who did that should be worried”
As the one year anniversary of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act signing approaches, the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee is calling out big spending Congressman Roy Blunt for his blatant hypocrisy on the legislation. Last year, Washington insider Congressman Blunt took part in a groundbreaking ceremony for a new visitors center at the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service’s Neosho National Fish Hatchery (NFH) in southwest Missouri. However, a portion of the new visitors center was made possible by $1.04 million in federal stimulus funds, which Blunt voted against. With the stimulus providing upwards of $3.4 billion for Missouri and credited with saving or creating 16,081 Missouri jobs, does Congressman Blunt regret that he voted against the legislation?
“It took less than a year for big spending Congressman Roy Blunt to think he could trick Missouri voters with doublespeak but facts are facts – Blunt voted against the Recovery Act but is now hypocritically taking credit for a project created by the legislation,” said Deirdre Murphy, DSCC National Press Secretary. “Having been a professional politician since the Nixon Administration, you would think Blunt would know that Missouri voters are tired of politicians feeding them heaping servings of hypocrisy. Blunt won’t be able to continue saying one thing in Missouri and doing another in DC.”
Even the conservative anti-tax group Club for Growth noted, “It’s pretty hypocritical for someone to be against the stimulus and then walk around handing out big checks,” said Andrew Roth, vice president of public affairs for the conservative anti-tax group Club for Growth. “I think Republicans who did that should be worried.” [Politico, 1/28/10]
Blunt’s record on the economy and spending is not one to be proud of. Blunt rubberstamped the disastrous policies put into place by former President George W. Bush that protected Wall Street and exploded the federal deficit. And now he continues to stand in the way of commonsense efforts to jumpstart job creation. The people of Missouri can thank Blunt for thousands of lost jobs, tax credits for corporations that move their jobs overseas, and a huge trade imbalance.
2009: Blunt Voted Against the Recovery Stimulus Package. In January 2009, Blunt voted against a $787 billion stimulus package. The legislation was a combination of fast-acting tax cuts and longer-term government spending on public works projects, education, health care, energy and technology. But, according to an analysis by the Congressional Budget Office, more than 74 percent of the money will be spent within the next 18 months. [New York Times, 2/13/09; HR 1, Vote #46, 1/28/09]
Blunt’s doublespeak hasn’t stopped at the stimulus. Earlier this year Congressman Blunt:
Sought Credit for a Tornado Safe Room that He Voted Against: Congressman Blunt took credit for a tornado shelter in his district, even though he voted against the funding for it in the Homeland Security Bill. Despite Congressman Blunt’s vote, over $1.3 million is going to fund a tornado safe room for the Missouri State University campus in West Plains, Missouri. [Springfield News Leader, 1/15/10; CQ Today, 9/24/08; Vote 632 , 9/24/08; HR 2638/ Public Law 110-329]
Sought Credit for Grants to Help the Homeless that He Voted Against: Congressman Blunt also sought credit recently for nearly $900,000 in grants to help the homeless, even though he voted against the funding. [Springfield News Leader, 1/12/10; HR 3288, Vote #949, 12/10/09]
Blunt Changed His Stance on Campaign Finance After Becoming a Washington Insider: Before Congressman Roy Blunt went to Washington, he advocated for strong campaign finance reform and criticized campaigns as “a national disgrace” that featured “rich special interests buying votes and elections.” Now – after 12 years as a Washington insider – Blunt is “pleased” with the Supreme Court ruling allowing corporations and special interests to unfairly influence elections. [St. Louis Post-Dispatch, 6/15/93; St. Louis Post-Dispatch, 1/22/10]
Congressman Blunt is running against State Senator Chuck Purgason, and businessmen Mark Memoly and Bob Praprotnik in the August 2010 primary for the Republican nomination for US Senate.
Congressman Blunt now has 3 challengers int he Missouri GOP primary for the US Senate race this year. State Senator Chuck Purgason, (who has to be the Tea Party’s favorite) is mounting the stiffest campaign. It is very interesting the way the Blunt campaign and the Missouri GOP are trying to bully these other candidates out of the race, if Congressman Blunt is the“establishment candidate” why does his base seem so angry with him?
Purgason challenges Blunt, others to sign a ‘Contract with Missouri’
By Chad Livengood clivengood@news-leader.com
JEFFERSON CITY — State Sen. Chuck Purgason, who is trying to mount an insurgency campaign against likely Republican Senate nominee Roy Blunt, wants Blunt and other candidates to pledge to a “Contract with Missouri” based on conservative principles.
“The terms of the Contract with Missouri include voting only for a balanced budget. Voting for a budget, wishing it was balanced, and putting off tough decisions cannot continue,” Purgason said in a written statement.
My personal favorite:
3. No member of my family will be a lobbyist
I believe that this is a conflict of interest. No member of my family is involved in any function of government other than being a hard working taxpayer who gets stuck paying the bills the lobbyists and politicians come up with. I make this pledge and challenge the other candidates in this race to also make this pledge.
Congressman Blunt’s Record of Wasteful Spending Draws Another Primary Opponent in Bob Praprotnik
Praprotnik joins Chuck Purgason and Mark Memoly in Republican Primary for U.S. Senate Seat
Jefferson City, MO – Bob Praprotnik is offering Republicans who are increasingly frustrated with Congressman Roy Blunt’s record of out of control spending that turned a $128 billion surplus into a $1.2 trillion deficit another choice for the U.S. Senate. Praprotnik had this to say about his opponents like Congressman Blunt “All our elected officials need to be held responsible for the recessions/depressions the created… they created the economic crises because of their policies. They should also be voted out of office.”
Praprotnik’s candidacy highlights a fractured Republican base that is furious with Congressman Blunt for reckless spending during his time in Congress. Blunt recently took an “aggressive grilling” from West County Republicans in St. Louis because of spending during his 13 years in Congress and his support for the Wall Street Bank Bailout and Medicare Part D. Video of the event can be found here: http://bit.ly/2kCS9c.
And earlier this winter, another of Congressman Blunt’s primary challengers, State Senator Chuck Purgason, told the Kansas City Star: “When Representative Blunt was in the leadership the deficit grew almost $1.5 trillion. Republicans have proved they can’t balance the budget either.” [Chuck Purgason, KC Star 12/27/09]
“Congressman Roy Blunt has a clear record of wasteful government spending, which is why he’s taking heat from Democrats and Republicans alike,” said Ryan Hobart, Communications Director for the Missouri Democratic Party. “It’s no surprise Bob Praprotnik is running, because Missourians are tired of Congressman Blunt’s DC doublespeak on fiscal responsibility, considering he was part of the Washington leadership team that turned a $128 billion surplus into a $1.2 trillion deficit.”
Congressman Blunt is running against State Senator Chuck Purgason, Kansas City auto consultant Mark Memoly, and Bob Praprotnik in the August 2010 primary for the Republican nomination for US Senate.
