Four Freedoms Democratic Club

What are the Four Freedoms?
In a speech to Congress in 1941, President Franklin Roosevelt promised before Congress that America would fight for a postwar world where all citizens were guaranteed the four basic human freedoms known as the Four Freedoms, they are:

  • Freedom of Speech and Expression
  • Freedom of Worship
  • Freedom from Want
  • Freedom from Fear

In May of 1998, Congressman Barney Frank organized a meeting in Kansas City that founded the National Stonewall Democratic Federation, an organization of gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender Democratic clubs and individuals.  Four months later, the Four Freedoms Democratic Club was incorporated to advance equal rights for all people, regardless of sexual orientation or gender identity. The Four Freedoms Democratic Club is committed:

To advancing the equal rights for all persons regardless of their sexual orientation or gender identity
To educate people about the vast differences between the Democratic and Republican parties on the issues of particular concern to the LGBT community.

To encourage the community to support and vote for Democratic candidates who are committed to fairness and equality for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender Americans.

To lead the Democratic Party to improve its record on the issues of concern to the LGBT community, and to work for nomination of Democratic candidates who will be fully supportive of the fight against bigotry and intolerance.

To work with other organizations and Democratic clubs that are committed to ending homophobia, and to foster the development of other similar organizations.

To promote and encourage participation in the National Stonewall Democrats.

Since its inception the Four Freedoms Democratic Club has sponsored voter registration drives, screened potential candidates, provided campaign support for endorsed candidates and has gained political visibility for LGBT citizens through events and educational forums.
