State Representative Holsman
Jason R. Holsman is currently serving as the Representative for Missouri’s 45th District, which encompasses South Kansas City and Grandview, MO. First elected in 2006, Holsman is the Ranking Member on the Energy and Environment Committee, the Vice-Chair of the Democratic Policy Committee, a deputy floor whip, and the Recruiting Chair for the House Democrat Campaign Committee.
A native Kansas Citian, Holsman’s father is the owner of a municipal solid waste firm located within the 45th District. Growing up in and around the solid-waste industry was a key factor in Holsman’s emergence as one of the state’s top environmental legislators in 2007.
In his first year in the General Assembly, he was instrumental in the passage of SB54, Green Power Initiative, by adding the Easy Connection Act, a piece of legislation which allows homeowners to install environmentally friendly energy generation technologies on their property and connect them to the power grid. For his accomplishments, Holsman won the Missouri Electric Cooperatives’ Legislative Leadership Award, Renew Missouri’s Legislator of the Year Award, and was selected as one of Missouri Votes Conservation’s Green Leaders. In addition to the Easy Connection Act, Holsman has also sponsored the Solar & Wind Incentive Program and the Alternative Energy Tax Deduction Program.
Prior to his service in the state legislature, Holsman was a high school teacher and coach, teaching inner-city students for the Kansas City School District. His commitment to Missouri’s youth is evident in his sponsorship of the Universal Health Care for Kids Act, designed to provide healthcare to all children, regardless of their parents’ income level. He has also pushed to reduce classroom sizes in Kansas City schools and authored the Teacher Compensation Legislation.
Jason Holsman earned a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science and US History from the University of Kansas. In 2004, he received a Masters degree in Diplomacy and military Science from Norwich University. He is married to Robyn (Boyd) Holsman and has two young children. Outside of his duties as a State Representative, Holsman is a History professor with the University of Phoenix.
