State Representative Jason Kander

Jason KanderState Representative Jason Kander (D – Kansas City)
was elected in November 2008. He represents the 44th District, which includes Brookside, Waldo, the Ward Parkway Corridor and portions of the Center and Hickman Mills school districts. He sits on the Budget Committee, the Joint Committee on Life Sciences, and the Homeland Security Committee. He is also the Communications Chair for the House Democratic Campaign Committee.

Jason is an attorney with The Barnes Law Firm where he handles civil justice claims and represents labor unions in contract negotiations. Previously, he was employed as a Political Science Instructor at UMKC and as a litigation associate with Spencer Fane. He has advised members of Congress on foreign policy issues and provided political commentary on local and national radio.

After 9/11, Jason enlisted in the Army National Guard with an infantry unit and later became a military intelligence officer in the Army Reserve.  He volunteered for a combat deployment and served in Afghanistan from 2006 to 2007. Currently, he serves as a platoon trainer with the Missouri Army National Guard’s 140th Regional Training Institute’s Officer Candidate School. A First Lieutenant, he has recently been recommended for promotion to Captain.

Jason was named an “Emerging Leader” by VoteVets.org in 2008 and now serves as one of their Senior Advisors. He also sits on the board of directors of CORO Kansas City and is a member of the Committee for County Progress and the Women’s Political Caucus, as well as several bar associations and the Missouri Association of Trial Attorneys.

A 1999 graduate of Bishop Miege High School, he received a B.A. in Political Science from American University in 2002 and a J.D. from Georgetown Law School in 2005.

Jason lives in Kansas City with his wife, Diana.
